What is RAV VAST?
RAV Vast is a metal drum, shaped like a UFO, with perfectly cut steel tongues tuned to stationary, specific pitches . RAV VAST drums are part of the handpan family, which draws from their roots in the steel drum family, mirroring the traditional steel pans of the Caribbean Islands, Handpans were first referred to as sound sculpture and originated in Bern Switzerland, where inventors Felix Rohner and Sabina Schårer, founders of PANArt®, constructed a complex musical instrument called The Hang®, (meaning “hand” in Bernese German). The instrument is made of two convex sheets of steel, hand tuned with notes on the top and bottom, then glued together. The RAV, invnted by a Russian engineer, Andrey Remyannikov in 2013, takes the similar shape of the Hang, but it's patented technology allows for greater sustain and ease of play.
Paul David will plays three RAV VAST drums for this concert one tuned to B rus (B minor). one is an E Pygmy scale and one tuned to the C Golden Gate scale. You can learn more about these drums at ravvast.com.
